Tenmoku tea bowls originated from Song Dynasty China 800 years ago. At that time, Japanese monks were learning Buddhism in Tenmoku Mountain in Zhejiang of China and brought back the art of tea and tea bowls back to Japan. The deep dark glaze of Tenmoku bowls can reflect the white foam of the tea well and hence it became very popular and was considered one of the best tea bowls.

天目茶碗，是源於中國宋朝的一種茶碗。宋朝時期，日本留學僧人前往浙江西北部的禪林聖地天目山等地學習佛理，將中國當時的品茗之道及當時使用的茶碗傳進日本，茶道在日本遂開始盛行，所使用的茶碗也被稱為天目碗，那時只是通稱由天目山帶回的碗，但由於鬥茶之風盛行一種半發酵的白茶，茶泡越白，表示茶的品質與技術越佳，使用黑盞更能襯托茶泡的白皙程度，其後天目茶碗便成了黑釉茶碗的通稱。
